Jeju Island is renowned for its diverse landscapes, and Bijarim Forest stands out as a captivating example of the island’s natural beauty.

Bijarim Forest in Jeju

Bijarim Forest is home to a vast expanse of ancient nutmeg trees, offering a serene escape from the ordinary. It may not be on the top of the list of places to visit in Jeju, but it's a hidden gem that's worth exploring.

What to Expect at Bijarim Forest

Bijarim Forest is located in Gujwa-eup, which is a rural area known for its stunning natural beauty and laid-back atmosphere.

Unlike some of Jeju Island's more famous attractions, Bijarim is a beloved local retreat. Here, you won't find the usual touristy crowds. The air is crisp and clean, filled with the subtle scent of pine, and the sound of birdsong is a constant companion. I could imagine the sunlight filtering through the canopy, creating a magical atmosphere, but it was raining when I went there. It was still nice, nevertheless.

One of the forest's most impressive features is the "Tree of One Thousand Years," a Torreya believed to be the ancestor of all Torreyas. This ancient giant stands at 14 meters tall with a crown spanning 15 meters. Estimated to be over 820 years old, it's the oldest Torreya on Jeju Island. It's a truly awe-inspiring sight.

The forest is relatively flat, making it easy to explore at your own pace. There are well-maintained paths that wind through the trees, inviting you to wander and soak in the surroundings. It's a perfect place for a leisurely stroll, meditation, or simply connecting with nature.

How to Get to Bijarim Forest

Located in the northeastern part of Jeju Island, Bijarim Forest is easily accessible. Renting a car offers the most flexibility, allowing you to explore the surrounding area at your leisure. Alternatively, public buses provide a cheap option for reaching this natural wonder. You can easily navigate by car or public transportation using Naver Map.

Since this area of Jeju is less served by public transportation, a more convenient way to reach Bijarim Forest without renting a car is by taking a taxi. However, this option can be pricey.

For me, the best way to get to Bijarim Forest without renting a car is by joining a guided tour. While exploring the forest on your own can be rewarding, joining a guided tour can enhance your experience. A knowledgeable guide can provide valuable insights into the forest's history, ecology, and cultural significance. Plus, you'll save time and effort in navigating the area

Where to Get Tickets to Bijarim Forest

To enter Bijarim Forest, there’s a small entrance fee of KRW3,000 for adults and KRW1,500 for teenagers and children. This fee helps maintain the forest and protect its natural beauty.
