Despite facing economic challenges and neglect, the residents of the village persevered. Instead, they turned their houses into colorful works of art. Their hard work and determination led to the village becoming the vibrant cultural center it is now.

Presently, Gamcheon Culture Village is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Busan. Visitors from around the world flock to this village to walk along its winding and colorful streets, enjoying everything the village has to offer. The best part about it is that it's free, which makes it a perfect place to explore if you're traveling on a budget.

Visiting Gamcheon Culture Village was such a fun experience for me. I'd recommend allotting at least a few hours of your day here because there are a lot of things to see and do.

As you wander through its narrow alleys, you'll encounter an array of colors splashed across the facades of houses. Every corner reveals a new piece of street art, each contributing to the village's vibrant atmosphere, offering a visual feast for art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.

Jungkook and Jimin Mural

This is for the BTS ARMYs. If you're a fan of BTS, one mural to look out for is that of Jungkook and Jimin, who both came from Busan. I kid you not; I squealed loudly when I first saw the mural. It was another surreal moment that I had as an ARMY.

How to Get to Gamcheon Culture Village

Just like in Seoul, public transportation is widely used in Busan. Unlike Seoul, it would require a few transfers between trains and buses to get from one spot to another in Busan.

If you're coming from Busan Station, take Line 1 Orange Line towards Sinpyeong, then transfer to Line 2 Green Line at Seomyeon Station. Get off at Toseong Station Exit 6, then take Bus No. 2 or 2-2. Get off at Gamcheon Elementary School Bus Stop and walk for about 5 minutes uphill to reach the entrance of Gamcheon Culture Village.

If you're coming from somewhere else in Busan, use Naver Map to get accurate directions to Gamcheon Culture Village. 

Taxis are also readily available throughout Busan and are a convenient option for reaching Gamcheon Culture Village, especially if you prefer a direct route. Simply provide the address to the taxi driver, and they'll take you directly to the village entrance. As always, this is a more expensive option, so be prepared to spend more if you prefer taking taxis to get around the city.

Tips for Visiting Gamcheon Culture Village

Here are some tips to make your visit to Gamcheon Culture Village memorable.

  • Wear comfortable shoes. Exploring the village involves a lot of walking. And with its hilly terrain, you can expect your feet to be aching afterwards, especially if you don't wear comfortable shoes. 
  • Respect the residents. Gamcheon Culture Village may be a tourist attraction, but is still a residential area. While taking photos and admiring the artwork, be mindful of residents' privacy and property. Keep an eye out for signages telling visitors to maintain silence and follow these instructions.
  • Visit during off-peak days. To avoid crowds, consider visiting the village on weekdays. 
  • Support local businesses. Purchase souvenirs, artwork, or snacks from local shops to support the community.
