Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is renowned for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant arts scene, offering lots of activities and attractions for visitors. If you're planning a trip to the city, then checking out some of its museums is a must.

Nobel Prize Museum in Stockholm

The city hosts a diverse array of museums to cater to different interests - from art, history, maritime achievements, and even the iconic pop group ABBA - there's always something for everyone. Here are some of the notable museums to visit. 

The Swedish History Museum

The Swedish History Museum, also known as Historiska Museet, is a prominent cultural institution in the city. Vasa Museum

The Vasa Museum, also known as Vasamuseet in Swedish, is home to the 17th-century warship Vasa, which sank on its maiden voyage in 1628 and was salvaged in 1961. The museum provides a fascinating insight into maritime history. This was easily my favorite museum in Stockholm, and probably in the Scandinavian region so I'd highly recommend visiting it.

Skansen

Skansen is an open-air museum and zoo that showcases traditional Swedish rural life. This expansive attraction showcases a living exhibition of traditional rural life with over 150 historic buildings transported from different parts of Sweden. It's the world's oldest open-air museum where visitors can explore the well-preserved structures, watch demonstrations of traditional crafts, and encounter native Nordic animals in the adjoining zoo, making Skansen a delightful blend of history, culture, and nature.

Moderna Museet

Moderna Museet is a leading contemporary art museum in Stockholm. It showcases an extensive collection of works by Swedish and international artists. The museum's diverse exhibits include pieces by iconic figures such as Picasso, Dali, and Warhol, making it a dynamic hub for modern and contemporary art enthusiasts.

The Nobel Prize Museum

The Nobel Prize Museum, also known as Nobel prize-Museet, is dedicated to showcasing the history and significance of the Nobel Prize. It explores the life of Alfred Nobel, the founder of the prize, and highlights the achievements of Nobel laureates in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, Peace, and Economic Sciences. The ABBA Museum

Yup - you read that right. This museum exists, and it's a fun little attraction in Stockholm, even if you're not a super fan of the group. I mean, at one point, everyone has bopped along to their catchy songs.

The ABBA Museum in Stockholm is a vibrant tribute to the legendary Swedish pop group, allowing fans and visitors to immerse themselves in the band's history. It features interactive exhibits, memorabilia, and even a chance to sing along with ABBA hits in a recreated studio setting.

Nationalmuseum

Nationalmuseum is Sweden's premier fine arts museum. It's a treasure trove of artistic masterpieces spanning from the Middle Ages to contemporary works. This museum houses an impressive collection of paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts, providing visitors with a comprehensive journey through the evolution of art in Sweden.

There are many more museums in Stockholm and if you're only staying for a few days, then you won't have the time to visit all of them. If you have limited time in the city, then the museums on this list are the ones you shouldn't miss out on.
