When I was in the Netherlands, I was pleasantly surprised by the food. My introduction to Dutch cuisine was the famous bitterballen, which is basically minced meat that's breaded and fried - and it didn't disappoint. After trying it, I was raring to eat more local food.

The next Dutch food I've tried is the kibbeling which consists of battered chunks of fish. It's commonly served with a mayonnaise-based garlic sauce or tartar sauce and with fries on the side. I ordered this when I was in a town called Volendam. It's a fishing town on the Markermeer Lake, northeast of Amsterdam.

I had the kibbeling with fries and a side salad. I ordered at a popular local restaurant called De Lunch.

The kibbeling was quite good. I wasn't sure what type of fish was used but it was tender and cooked perfectly. The batter was also very tasty and the tartar sauce went perfectly with the whole dish. The fries were also good.

If ever you're in the Netherlands, I'd recommend this dish, especially if you find yourself in Volendam. If you join the guided tour to the countryside, then you'll definitely make it to this town. I suggest you drop by De Lunch - which shouldn't be hard to miss since it's right across the harbor.
