Germany is known for its castles and medieval architecture. One of the castles that I got to visit while I was in Germany was Harburg Castle, which is one of the oldest and strongest castles in the country.

I visited Harburg Castle when I joined a group tour going to Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber and this castle was the first stop of our tour.

About Harburg Castle

Harburg Castle, also known as Burg Harburg, is a medieval castle located in the town of Harburg in Bavaria, Germany. It's situated on a hill that's overlooking the Wörnitz River.

The castle dates back to the 11th century and is considered one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Southern Germany. It was originally constructed as a fortified castle to protect the important trade routes in the region and has been expanded and modified several times over the centuries.

Guided tours are available to learn about the castle's history. The day trip included that so we got to see the different parts and rooms of the castle, including its defensive walls which were used during wars. We also saw the museum, which displays a collection of weapons, armor, and medieval artifacts.

Harburg Castle remains privately owned and is still inhabited by the current descendants of the original noble family. It serves as both a historical landmark and a residence, giving visitors a unique glimpse into the castle's rich past and continuing legacy.

How to Get to Harburg Castle from Munich

Harburg has a train station. If you're taking public transportation, you can simply take the train from Munich and get off at Harburg (Schwab) station. This station also connects to other cities like Augsburg and Nuremberg. And once you reach Harburg (Schwab), you can take a cab or walk to the castle, which is about 2 kilometers away.

Or you can just do what I did which was to book a day trip that includes Harburg Castle and Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber. The tour departs from Karlsplatz in Munich and it was a convenient way to visit these places in one day.

If you're in Munich, I would definitely recommend the Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber and Harburg Castle day trip. It's definitely an activity that you shouldn't miss out on.
