Butuan City is the capital of Agusan Del Norte. It is a highly urbanized area, with various ports of entry by sea, land, and air travel.

While I was living in Siargao, I went to Butuan a couple of times to run errands in the bank, shop for stuff that I couldn't find on the island, and watch movies at the cinema. While the errands can simply be done in Surigao City, which is much closer to Siargao, I prefer going to Butuan to get some much-needed city break.

One tourist spot you can visit while in Butuan City is the Banza Church Ruins. It is located at the oldest Poblacion of Butuan City and it is the oldest stone church ruin in the entire island of Mindanao. The church was built in 1625 by the Recollect Friars but it was burned down by Moro pirates in 1973.

What was left of the church now is part of the bell tower that is enveloped by a banyan tree. It is now a popular tourist spot in Butuan.

From the city proper, Banza Church Ruins is roughly 30-minutes away. You can find it on Google Maps here. You can also take public transportation to go there.

If you have one day for sightseeing in Butuan City, I'd recommend checking this place out.
