Fish and chips is one of those dishes you can’t skip when visiting London, so I made it a point to find a place that locals actually go to. Sutton & Sons kept popping up in lists and recommendations, and as luck would have it, there was one just a few minutes’ walk from where I was staying in Hackney. I went there for dinner one evening after a full day of exploring, and it did not disappoint.

Sutton & Sons has a few locations around London, including in Hackney, Stoke Newington, and Islington, but I went to the Hackney branch. It’s a small, casual spot with indoor seating and a steady stream of customers. The area might look a bit rough around the edges, but the place itself felt welcoming and unpretentious.

Sutton & Sons Fish and Chips
classic cod and chips

I ordered the classic cod and chips, because when in London, you go traditional first. The batter was perfectly crisp without being oily, and the fish inside was tender and flaky. The chips were thick-cut and golden, seasoned just right. The portions were generous, and everything came out hot and fresh. They also have other options like haddock, plaice, scampi, and even vegan 'fish' made with banana blossom for those who want something different.

For a classic cod and chips meal, I paid about £13.95, which felt fair for the portion size and quality. It’s not the cheapest fish and chips in town, but you’re paying for something freshly made and consistently good.

Compared to the tourist-heavy spots in central London, Sutton & Sons feels like good value for money. It’s a great choice if you’re after that authentic British comfort meal and you want to try a place that’s not overly commercialized. If you’re not staying near any of their branches, they’re also available on Deliveroo, so you can still try their food without having to make the trip.
