Trying scuba diving has always been on my bucket list, but I never quite got around to it – until Boracay. I didn’t go for a full-on certification course or anything too intense. Instead, I booked an Intro to Scuba Diving experience, which turned out to be the perfect way to dip my toes (well, my whole body) into the underwater world.
The session starts with a short briefing on the basics – how to breathe underwater, hand signals, equalising pressure, and using the gear. After that, you get into shallow water to practice until you're comfortable. Once you're all set, the instructor takes you out for a guided dive through the reefs. It’s not a deep dive, but you still get to explore Boracay’s vibrant marine life up close, which felt surreal. I didn’t have to worry about anything technical since my instructor handled all the navigating.
What’s nice is that this intro course includes underwater photos and videos, so you come away with a little souvenir of your first dive. You even get a certificate at the end, which is more of a “hey, you did it!” keepsake rather than a license to dive. If you're on the fence about getting certified, this is a great way to test the waters – literally – before committing to something bigger.
You can book the experience through GetYourGuide, which makes the whole process super easy. They’ll connect you with a local dive centre, and everything from the equipment to the documentation is taken care of. It’s beginner-friendly and designed for people who’ve never tried scuba before – just like me.
It might not have been a full dive into the world of scuba (pun intended), but it was more than enough to get me hooked. There’s something pretty amazing about being underwater and feeling like you're in another world. Would I do it again? Absolutely – and next time, maybe I’ll go for the full certification.
