If you’re in Seoul and looking for authentic Korean food, a good rule of thumb is to go to places that specialize in just a few dishes. When a restaurant focuses on only a handful of menu items, you know they’ve mastered them. One perfect example is Gobong Samgyetang. Located in Myeongdong, it's a restaurant known for its incredible samgyetang.
Gobong Samgyetang’s specialty is SangHwang Samgyetang, a traditional Korean ginseng chicken soup made with a young, whole chicken stuffed with glutinous rice, jujubes, garlic, and medicinal herbs. The addition of sanghwang mushrooms, known for their health benefits, gives the dish a unique depth of flavor.

Gobong Samgyetang is extremely popular, and on many days, you’ll have to wait in line to get a table. My friend and I went around 6pm, which was still early for dinner by local standards, so we were lucky to get in without waiting. If you go during peak hours, be prepared to queue—which shows how good the food is.
I tried the samgyetang in winter, and it was absolutely perfect. The broth was deeply flavorful, the chicken was tender, and the combination of ingredients made it feel like a warm. It’s the kind of dish that leaves you feeling satisfied and cozy, making it an excellent choice for anyone wanting a taste of true Korean comfort food.
If you’re in Seoul and craving something hearty and traditional, Gobong Samgyetang should definitely be on your list!
