Traveling solo can be daunting, especially when you lack experience exploring new places on your own. As a solo female traveler, safety has always been a top concern for me. While I've found that traveling alone can be a rewarding and empowering experience for me, I always make sure to take extra precautions.

If you're a woman and you're looking to solo travel, here are some safety tips that I'd like to share with you.

Safety Tips for Solo Female Travelers

1. Research your destination.

Before you go, research your destination's safety, cultural norms, and local customs. Watch vlogs about the common scams in your destination. For example, Rome, Florence, and Paris are known to have lots of scammers in popular touristy areas and it's always best to know the tactics that they use so you can avoid them. Check travel advisories and register with your embassy or consulate if recommended.

2. Share your itinerary and stay connected.

Share your travel plans with a trusted friend or family member, including your accommodations and contact information. Check in with them regularly and tell them about your current whereabouts, whether you're in transit or if you've arrived at a new destination. Make sure to get a local SIM card or international data plan so that you stay connected.

3. Choose safe accommodations.

Opt for reputable hotels, hostels, or guesthouses in well-located areas, even if it means spending more. Always prioritize safety over saving money. Make sure to check reviews from other female travelers to gauge safety and comfort.

4. Plan your arrival times.

Whenever possible, plan your arrival times during daylight hours. Arriving at your destination during the day helps in familiarizing yourself with the area and transportation options. If you have absolutely no choice but to arrive late at night, I'd suggest waiting it out at the airport. Staying at the airport is safer than wandering in unfamiliar areas at night.

5. Dress appropriately.

Dress in a way that respects local customs and norms, which can vary widely by country. Avoid flashy jewelry and clothing that may draw unwanted attention. For this, I'd even recommend blending in and "not looking like a tourist" as this helps deter scammers and pickpocketers.

For example, in Europe, locals tend to dress in classier outfits. Wearing tights, athletic wear, and running shoes while carrying a backpack screams "tourist" and would immediately attract petty thieves. Opt for comfortable basics like jeans or trousers, paired with a simple white shirt, blazer, and white sneakers.

6. Carry a decoy wallet.

Keep a small amount of cash and expired cards in a decoy wallet in case you're faced with a theft attempt. If you're using cash, don't bring all of them with you when you're out and about. Keep your primary wallet and important documents secure and hidden.

7. Use reliable transportation.

Use reputable transportation services and, when possible, book them in advance. Be cautious when accepting rides from strangers and use licensed taxis or rideshare services. When getting around a city with a subway or train system, I always opt for those rather than riding taxis.

8. Learn basic phrases.

Learn a few basic phrases in the local language to help communicate and navigate common situations. Keep in mind that not everyone can speak English, most especially in non-English speaking countries - and it would be rude to expect them to - so it's always good to know basic words and phrases.

9. Join group activities.

Participate in group tours or activities to meet fellow travelers and have a safety net in unfamiliar places. If you're staying at a hostel, these places usually organize group activities for guests. You can also book group tours through third-party sites like Klook and GetYourGuide. Group tours are a great way to meet new people and in my years of solo traveling, I've made good friends from all over the world through these tours.

Another tip: join Facebook groups like Host A Sister and Gals Who Travel to meet fellow female solo travelers. These groups allow you to post your travel dates and destination so you can find other women to travel with. You can plan to do some activities together or meet up to eat, which is always nice so you don't feel alone all the time.

10. Avoid excessive alcohol.

It's okay to drink when solo traveling especially when you've met some people during your trip. When you do drink, limit alcohol consumption, as it impairs judgment and makes you more vulnerable. Always watch your drink to prevent tampering.

11. Carry self-defense items.

It always helps to carry self-defense items like a whistle, personal alarm, or self-defense keychain, whether you're traveling in a foreign country or just commuting in your city. You can also take a self-defense class before your trip to boost your confidence.

12. Stay alert and trust your instincts.

Be aware of your surroundings at all times, especially when you're in a crowded or unfamiliar place. When in crowded trains, don't put your phone in your pocket, watch your bag, and be on the lookout for potential pickpocketers. Always avoid distractions, such as walking while looking at your phone or listening to loud music.

If a situation or person makes you uncomfortable, remove yourself from it right away. Trust your intuition, and don't be afraid to say no or walk away from an uncomfortable situation.

13. Be confident.

Appear confident and walk with purpose, even if you're not sure where you're going. Confident body language can deter potential threats.

I hope that you find these safety tips for solo female travelers helpful. I wish you all the best on your solo adventures!
