Kampong Glam Cafe isn’t really a café in the usual sense. It’s more of a casual eatery with outdoor seating right along the street. Honestly, it wouldn’t have been my first choice. It looks chaotic at first glance, with tables spilling onto the sidewalk and long queues forming outside.

I visited the area in the morning, though, and not many places were open yet. I didn’t have much of a choice, so I decided to just go for it. The long line of both tourists and locals told me one thing immediately: the food here must be pretty good.

I ordered the nasi lemak, which is a classic dish made up of coconut rice, sambal, egg, and fried chicken. Instead of the usual anchovies, mine came with a whole deep-fried fish that was slightly bigger, plus a slice of cucumber on the side. The plate was simple but generous, with a big serving of rice, a fried egg, a chicken wing, the fried fish, and a bright red sambal sauce. The price shocked me the most. It was only SGD 3.50, which is very cheap by Singapore standards.

Taste-wise, it wasn’t the best nasi lemak I’ve ever had, but for SGD3.50, it was honestly solid. The chicken was slightly dry, but it was still flavorful, and the sambal helped a lot. The portion was filling, and I didn’t feel shortchanged at all. For that price in Singapore, I really can’t complain.

Overall, Kampong Glam Cafe turned out to be a practical and satisfying choice for an early lunch. It may not be the most polished dining experience, but it delivers good value and generous portions. If you’re in the area early in the day and need something affordable and filling, this is a reliable option. Sometimes, simple and straightforward is exactly what you need.
