When traveling, I eat local food as much as possible because food is part of a country's culture. I believe that you have to try local cuisine to truly experience the culture. I've said this probably a thousand times in my blog, but I'll keep repeating it because I can't stress it enough.
Honestly, I don't think any trip is complete without trying out some local food so if you're the type who just prefers to eat at a McDonald's the whole trip, then you're missing out on a lot.
Anyway, up next on my foodie adventures is Cafe 22, which is a local coffee shop and restaurant in Prague. It is located in Mala Strana, a neighborhood just outside the old town. I went here after a long walk from Prague Castle followed by climbing so many stairs inside the bell tower of St. Nicholas Church, which is just beside the restaurant. Before going to Prague Castle, I was on an early morning train from Vienna followed by a quick check-in to my hotel. So I was tired and starving by then and here's what I ordered.
sirloin and dumplings in cream sauce |
goulash soup in homemade bread |
Overall, the food at Cafe 22 was good.
The goulash soup was a nice hearty treat on a cold autumn day. At first, I thought the dumplings dish looked a little odd because I always had this notion that dumplings should have some sort of filling in them. But nevertheless, it was a tasty dish. The sirloin was cooked perfectly and it was tender. The dumplings were soft and I did like the cream sauce, although I think there was too much of it but maybe that's how they normally serve it.
The service was also good. The wait staff was quite friendly and accommodating. They checked in on me frequently and kept asking me how the food was and if I needed anything, so I thought that was nice. I don't know if this was because I was alone but one of the staff approached me and we ended up chit chatting for a bit.
The price was okay. I thought it was reasonable considering how the food tasted and how good the service was.
There were mixed reviews about this place all over the web, but from my experience, I'd recommend Café 22. I got to try some local Czech cuisine and they made it a pretty good dining experience overall.
